What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a highly relaxed mental state. In this state, the mind relaxes and is ready to learn. Hypnosis allows us to turn of the critical, conscious mind.

In a deeply relaxed hypnosis, we can override these automatic thoughts and update this thinking with new suggestions. Hypnosis works by allowing us to alter our unconscious thought processes to achieve specific goals.

Hypnosis in everyday life

Hypnosis is a natural, familiar state. We all move in and out of the hypnotic state all day long. For instance, sometimes we go into this state when we're driving, watching TV, listening to music, or working on a project that we're passionate about.

Some people can enter into hypnosis more quickly than others, and everyone can improve his or her ability to reach the hypnotic state through practice. A lot of people think they can't be hypnotized, but they can. Everyone can be hypnotized. Hypnosis is more similar to daydreaming than it is to sleep. (although if you do fall asleep during hypnosis, the suggestions are still absorbed.)

Why it works: Hypnotherapy works because when we are relaxed and feeling safe we become open to suggestions, that's it.

Hypnosis is a process that produces increased awareness of the unconscious mind, heightened sense of suggestibility and deep relaxation to access the subconscious mind without resistance. This allows for brain wave state shifts to take place to promote wellness and recovery. Hypnotherapy does not access willpower but has the amazing ability to utilize the power of imagination and effect a change in reality by accessing the subconscious mind.
